Legislative News!
I’ve been busy the last couple of months reviewing the legislative site on the SHRM web site and the various literature I receive in the mail to keep the membership abreast of the changes in the senate and the house so that we can assist our congressmen in making their decisions. Our letters, calls or petitions go along way towards shaping their decisions and I hope I’m able to assist the membership by providing timely, accurate information. SHRM has a legislative chair that communicates with me monthly via e-mail to let me
know where the organization is taking a stand and ask for our chapter to support their efforts.

Diversity News!
Workplace diversity is an issue that has taken front and center in many of America's organizations. Whether because of unpleasant and costly lawsuits or because of a strategic response to significant demographic changes, diversity in the workplace is here to stay.

Studies show that the impact of having a diverse workforce and of selling to diverse markets is paramount to maintaining competitive advantage and influencing organizational growth. As a result, HR professionals have the unique opportunity to design and implement diversity plans that are successful. Making the business case for diversity in the workplace is an opportunity to position human resources as a strategic partner within your organization.

Cathy Poniatowski, Affirmative Action/EEO Coordinator for Boeing, has graciously volunteered to serve as a committee member for the Diversity Chair. One the goals for the SHRM - Emerald Coast Chapter for 2000 is to achieve a more diverse membership. To accomplish this, we must be realistic and creative. Any suggestions that you might have would be appreciated. Please e-mail me at raysb@sverdrup.com or call me at 850-897-2265.

The study group for the PHR/SPHR certification exam in December has started. We meet on Monday evening beginning at 6:00pm at Troy State in Ft. Walton Beach. (See schedule on page 4). We have about 6-8 people at this time planning to take the exam. A special thanks in advance to all the volunteer instructors for your time in instructing these classes. It is greatly appreciated by all. Thanks to John Irwin and Troy State for the use of their facilities so we can have the study classes. If you have any questions in regards to the certification or study group please call me at 267-9632 or e-mail me at Sheryl_Martin@hilton.com ormartinsheryl@netscape.net.

CONGRATULATIONS To Linda Rumph. Linda received her PHR Certification in May. Great job Linda!!

SHRM Liaison News!

SHRM Membership Benefits
Here I am extolling the virtues and value of being a member of the national SHRM organization. The reason I constantly bring up the issue is because I strongly believe membership is an absolute must for every HR professional. I know the annual dues are steep, but with a little persuasion I believe you can convince your boss the investment is worth the price.

First, and most importantly, membership gives you a real-time, on-line reference source to answer virtually any HR question. Surprise your boss with good solutions to tough problems you have because other folks in our profession are facing the same issues and have great ideas. Stay current on the many issues facing the national workforce. Know what Congress is proposing that will affect your job, your employees and your business. If you have any doubts about the value of membership, check out www.shrm.org. You will be impressed. It beats any other reference document you can buy for $145.
Jim Miller, SHRM Liaison

Board News!
At the last Board Meeting, discussion was held regarding the possibility of sending membership updates and membership renewal applications via e-mail instead of snail mail. The Board thought it would be a good idea to get feedback from the general membership to determine your thoughts to this suggestion. Would this work for you. Please give your feedback to one of the board members.
