The President's Corner

We’re approaching the end of the year already, but still have some informative programs to go. Our Mock Trial Seminar will be completed by the time you read this, but let me thank Tami Manard once again for the great job and many hours devoted in making this year’s seminar a memorable one. In November we’ll be meeting at Jobs Plus to see first hand the many services available to employers. In December we’ll have the Installation of Officers for 2003.

A list of the 2003 Board Members and Committee Chairs is included in the newsletter. We have a good mix on the Board next year of experience, education and background. There is one change to the slate proposed at our September meeting. Olivia Percle of Manpower has accepted the position of Newsletter Committee Chair. Olivia is stepping in for Ashley McCool, who is moving to Tampa with her family the end of this month. We wish Ashley, Chris and Colin the best of luck in south Florida.

The State Conference in Orlando was held September 22-25th. The theme was “The Show Must Go On,” and each session, meeting, vendor and speaker acted on the theme. Dee Dee Myers gave an attention-grabbing talk on her time in the White House as Press Secretary to President Bill Clinton. Eric Chester’s presentation on Generation Why! was compelling and amusing. Many other speakers offered valuable insight in their respective fields of expertise. Beyond the conference sessions, much fun was had by everyone from Karaoke night to dinners out to the final Gala Murder Mystery dinner theater. Next year the SHRM National Conference is in Orlando and we hope to see many local members able to attend. Remember, there is a need for as many as 1,000 volunteers at the National Conference. Volunteers receive six hours of conference time for 6 hours of volunteer time. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact me for more information.

There are still more travels to go this year. Cathy Poniatowski will be traveling to the Diversity Conference in Chicago the end of October, and both Cathy and Tami Manard will attend the Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. in November. The opportunity to get and share the information received at these conferences is a highlight of serving on the SHRM-ECC board.

Now is the time to let Cathy Poniatowski (2003 Program Chair and President-Elect) know if there are specific programs you would like to see next year or if you know of a speaker. Your input is helpful in planning programs that will provide information to effectively support member needs.

Best wishes to each of you as we enter the holiday season. Thank you for your support this year, and as always, I look forward to seeing you all at the meetings,

Kathy
